Howard Brown Health Center/ UIC School of Public Health, Chicago, Illinois, USA; Howard Brown Health Center, Chicago, Illinois, USA Background Transgender women are an underserved and understudied population with unique medical and behavioural risk profiles. High rates of STIs and HIV in this population have been reported, although accurately quantifying STI rates and associated risks is difficult because of limitations in measurement of gender identity, lack of standardised reporting measures, and conflation betweenMen who Have Sex with Men (MSM) and transgender identities. In 2009 we reported a substantial increase in syphilis among transgender women at our clinic (from two cases in 4 years to ten cases in 1 year); in 2010 we identified 20 new cases, another substantial increase. Patterns of herpes simplex virus shedding over 1 month and the impact of acyclovir and HIV in HSV-2-seropositive women in Tanzania
OBJECTIVES Few studies have examined the frequency and duration of genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) shedding in sub-Saharan Africa. This study describes HSV shedding patterns among a sample of HSV-2-seropositive women enrolled in a placebo-controlled trial of HSV suppressive therapy (acyclovir 400 mg twice a day) in Tanzania. METHODS Trial participants were invited to participate in a subst...
متن کاملClinical and virologic efficacy of herpes simplex virus type 2 suppression by acyclovir in a multicontinent clinical trial.
Acyclovir suppressive therapy (400 mg twice daily) reduces herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2-associated genital ulcer disease and lesional HSV shedding. In an international trial of acyclovir for suppression of HSV type 2 to prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition (HIV Prevention Trials Network 039), acyclovir had a smaller effect on the frequency of genital ulcer disease as well...
متن کاملValacyclovir and acyclovir for suppression of shedding of herpes simplex virus in the genital tract.
BACKGROUND Valacyclovir exhibits better oral absorption and higher, more prolonged serum concentrations than oral acyclovir. The efficacy of valacyclovir and acyclovir on genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) shedding was assessed in a double-blind, 3-period crossover trial. METHODS Sixty-nine immunocompetent participants with genital HSV-2 received oral valacyclovir, acyclovir, and matching pla...
متن کاملAcyclovir suppression to prevent recurrent genital herpes at delivery.
OBJECTIVE To determine if suppressive acyclovir near term decreased the frequency of clinical recurrences at delivery in women with recurrent genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. METHODS We conducted a prospective, double-blind, randomized trial in 234 women with recurrent genital herpes. Women with genital infection of any frequency were enrolled. Patients received either suppressiv...
متن کاملFrequent genital herpes simplex virus 2 shedding in immunocompetent women. Effect of acyclovir treatment.
Reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) occurs intermittently as perceived clinically and by viral culture. We performed a series of studies to evaluate the frequency and pattern of HSV-2 reactivation using both viral isolation and HSV PCR assay. Daily samples of genital secretions were obtained from 27 HSV-2 seropositive women; a subset of subjects obtained samples while receiving ...
